Answering the Call: A Pastor Apiya’s Origin Story

What inspired you to pursue ministry, and how has your journey evolved?
“My path to ministry began with a spiritual calling that was profound and challenging to understand initially. I wrestled with how to serve God in a way that fulfilled His purpose. This struggle eased under the mentorship of my late spiritual mother, Loi Kegode, and my benefactor, Margaret Kamidi Otiende. Their guidance solidified my faith and encouraged academic growth, which has been integral to my ministry. This dual focus on spiritual and intellectual development continues to shape my approach to pastoral leadership.”

What were your first impressions of Webuye Friends Church, and how did they change?
“Initially, the church appeared modest and somewhat reserved, but it didn’t take long to uncover its true strength—a tightly-knit, Christ-centered community. Over time, this congregation revealed its hunger for spiritual growth and its readiness to embrace change. This transformation from a quiet community to a vibrant and globally connected church is one of the most remarkable aspects of my tenure.”

Growth and Achievements at Webuye Friends Church

How has the church grown under your leadership?
“Webuye Friends Church has witnessed incredible transformation. Membership growth was not just about numbers; it was about deeper spiritual engagement. We leveraged technology to expand our reach, creating a global platform for worship and teaching. Events like Elders’ Day, Sunday School Day, and Youth Breakfast Day fostered a sense of unity while empowering each generation to take an active role in the church’s mission.”

What achievements are you most proud of?
“The advancement of our ICT capabilities stands out as a key milestone. Through our website development project, we extended our message far beyond Webuye, sharing the gospel across nations and our church service were more interactive. Another proud moment was introducing a culture of interactive events like the Elders Day, Youth Breakfast, and Sunday School Day that engaged different groups within the congregation. These activities not only deepened our bonds but also empowered individuals to take ownership of their roles within the church.”

What lessons have you learned from your time at Webuye Friends Church?
“One lesson that stands out is the importance of never judging a book by its cover. What appeared to be a reserved church turned out to be a powerhouse of spiritual and social potential. I also learned about resilience—how to lead during challenging times while remaining grounded in faith. Observing the congregation’s business acumen taught me valuable lessons in financial stewardship, which have enriched both my personal and professional life.”

On November 24th, 2024, Pastor John Apiya, his cherished wife Mama Eunice (by his right), their children, and devoted members of Mukuyu Monthly Meeting came together for an unforgettable Farewell Party—a heartfelt celebration of faith, love, and lasting memories.

Memorable Moments in Ministry

Can you share a sermon or teaching moment that resonated with the congregation?
“There are two sermons I hold close to my heart. The first, titled ‘The Firstborn Birthright,’ reflected on the responsibility and privilege of leadership. It was personal, as a firstborn myself, and deeply connected with many congregants. The second sermon, focused on resilience, was delivered during the Quaker World Day celebration. It emphasized enduring faith amidst challenges, a theme that resonates deeply with the Quaker community.”

How did you handle challenges within the church?
“Challenges are inevitable, but what matters is how we approach them. At Webuye Friends Church, we cultivated a culture of dialogue and collaboration. This openness allowed us to tackle difficulties head-on, turning them into opportunities for growth. Whether it was navigating logistical hurdles or addressing interpersonal concerns, our focus on unity always led us forward.”

Relationships that Built a Legacy

Who were the key individuals or groups that shaped your ministry?
“I was blessed to work with many dedicated individuals. Former Presiding Clerk Mama Emily Mukwanja and the current Presiding Clerk of the Sipala Quarterly Meeting, Mr. Stanley Ndombi were instrumental in fostering collaborative leadership. The Young Friends Programme (YFP), led by passionate individuals like Chris Mukwanja and Paul Wetosi, was a constant source of inspiration. Their tireless work on projects like website development exemplifies the power of youth in driving the church forward.”

How did the congregation support you during your tenure?
“The congregation has been a pillar of support, not only in ministry but in my personal life as well. They provided unwavering encouragement, both emotionally and financially, enabling me to focus fully on our shared mission. Their love and dedication uplifted my family and fortified my faith during both triumphs and challenges.”

How did you balance ministry and family responsibilities?
“Balancing these two crucial aspects of my life was not always easy. However, the leadership’s understanding and support played a significant role in helping me manage. My family’s involvement in church activities, especially during holidays, strengthened our bond and enriched my ministry.”

A Vision for the Future

What hopes do you have for Webuye Friends Church as you transition to Mukuyu Monthly Meeting?
“My greatest hope is for the church to continue growing, not just in numbers but in its spiritual depth and social impact. I pray for unity within the congregation and resilience in the face of challenges. I also hope the leadership continues to embrace innovation, ensuring that the church remains a beacon of faith and progress.”

What advice would you leave with the congregation?
“Trust in God’s plan and remain united. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and collective effort can achieve what seems impossible. This church has tremendous potential—nurture it with faith and love.”

Pastor Apiya left an indelible mark to the church at Webuye.
You helped me learn how to remain calm in the midst of challenges. Your initiative of starting the church website and linking the three tier of the church i.e the Sunday church school, the youth and the elders fostered the unity of purpose in the church. You helped the church actualize the dream of starting the storeyed multi purpose complex. Your legacy will live on.
